Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Lin, Fu-mei and Fu-Tyan Endowed Lectureship in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

The Fu-mei and Fu-Tyan Lin Endowed Lectureship in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering was established in 2025 by Ellen Lin, Alice Welch, and Kai-Ping Lin to honor their beloved parents and to sustain a lasting tribute to their legacy of scientific advancement, mentorship, and educational excellence. This annual lectureship will carry the Lin family name in perpetuity and promote continued innovation and inspiration within the fields of polymer science and polymer engineering.

Natives of Taiwan, Fu-mei and Fu-Tyan Lin began their professional journey as high school science teachers before pursuing greater opportunities in the United States. Fu-Tyan arrived first in 1969 followed by Fu-mei in 1971 with their three young children. Despite many early hardships, they both earned master's degrees in physics (Fu-Tyan '71 and Fu-mei '75) and doctorates in polymer science (Fu-Tyan '79 and Fu-mei '81) from 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß. Their deep appreciation for the University and their advisers, Dr. Charles Wilson Ill and Dr. James Harwood, remained with them throughout their lives.

Professionally, Fu-mei contributed to the field through her work at Calgon Corporation, where she supported groundbreaking research and nurtured young scientists through training and mentorship. Fu-Tyan enjoyed a distinguished academic career as a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he mentored countless students, with a special heart for international scholars who were far from home. Together, the couple were active in Pittcon and several professional societies, including the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh (SSP), the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP), and the American Chemical Society (ACS), earning multiple accolades for their leadership and service to the scientific community.

Married for 57 years, the Lins were partners in life and science, sharing not only a home and family, but a calling to contribute to the greater good. Their generosity of spirit was evident in the way they opened their home, offered guidance, and supported the next generation of researchers. With this lectureship, their children seek to uphold that spirit and ensure that their parents' legacy continues to enrich the academic community.

This endowed lectureship was established as part of We Rise Together, The Campaign for 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß.

The Fu-mei and Fu-Tyan Lin Endowed Lectureship in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering is designed to bring nationally or internationally recognized leaders to 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß to share insights and advances in the fields of polymer science and polymer engineering. The lecture will alternate annually between the two disciplines, ensuring balanced attention and honoring the distinct contributions of each field. This thoughtful rotation reflects the Lin family's appreciation for both the scientific foundations and practical applications that define these areas of study.

Each year, faculty members and the director of the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering will identify and recommend prospective lecturers whose work aligns with the vision of the lectureship. The final selection will be made by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science.

Funds from the Lectureship may be used to support expenses associated with hosting the lecturer and carrying out the program. This may include honorariums, travel, hospitality, and other costs necessary to ensure the success of the lecture.

To make a tax-deductible gift to this lectureship, please visit 91´«Ã½ÔÚÏß’s . Select “A different designation” from the drop-down menu and enter “Fu-mei and Fu-Tyan Lin Lectureship in PSPE” in the text box. Thank you!
